This weekend’s Stand Together Fest in Nashville was one of the most surprisingly delightful hardcore experiences I have had in a long time. There was a genuine, tangible brotherhood about the place and there wasn’t the dramatic, juvenile, testosterone driven belligerence that all too often dominates shows. There were bands that generated positive responses to heavy music, and the people displayed true consideration. No one got in a fight, even after 11 straight hours of mosh. Girls were in the pit. Everyone had a good time. And I watched mandolin shred and hardcore finger-pointing to the lyrics of Amazing Grace.
But in all seriousness, it made me realize that music is the baring of the soul for both musicians and the crowd, and too many people are carrying violence in their hearts.
